Apprenticeships see fall in numbers. Pearson May News Update - Monday 21 December
Apprenticeships see fall in numbers The governments strategy of using apprenticeships to tackle unemployment among the young may be encountering difficulties. Figures from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills have revealed that the number of 16 to 18-year-olds starting apprenticeships declined by 7.5 per cent over the last year, while the number of 19 to 24-year-olds joining apprenticeship schemes also recorded a fall of 5.9 per cent. Tom Richmond, the skills adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), said that the data suggest that the governments policy of expanding apprenticeships to tackle youth unemployment is faltering. Mr Richmond commented: While we applaud the governments broad commitment to supporting young people in these difficult times, it is clear that apprenticeships alone are not capable of solving the problems faced by school, college and university leavers. The governments announcement that a subsidy of £2,500 will be offered to firms for taking on young apprentices fails to address these concerns, especially as it will only be given to 5,000 companies.
