Register now for online tax returns. Pearson May News Update - Thursday 8 December Pearson May news blogRegister now for online tax returns Businesses who are filing their tax returns online for the first time in January have been urged to register now. The deadline for filing online tax returns is 31 January 2012, but if you are completing an online return for the first time you will first need to register for online filing. A User ID and Activation Code will then be posted to you before you can activate your account and file your return. HMRC has warned that it can take up to 10 days to receive your Activation Code, and is therefore urging business to register now to avoid the January rush. Those who have filed online before are also being urged to check that they still have their User ID and password because it can take up to 10 days to receive a replacement. Finally, HMRC is also urging businesses not to file on paper, the deadline for this was 31 October 2011, and anyone that does so now will receive a £100 penalty - even if there is no tax to pay, or pay your tax on time. New penalties for late self-assessment returns are now in place, and could add up to more than £1300 over six months.
